Preventing slips, trips and falls at Memorial

Slips, trips, and falls have been identified as a major source of injury at Memorial University. Everyone who spends time on campus is at risk for slips, trips and falls. This includes students, staff, faculty and visitors. In order to decrease slip, trip and fall-related injuries, Memorial University is taking a proactive approach by developing a slip, trip and fall prevention program.

As part of this program, Memorial is launching the Treadsafe campaign.

The goal of the campaign is to increase the awareness of potential hazards that may cause slip, trip and fall injuries, and to educate people on what they can do to protect themselves from a slip, trip and fall. The campaign will actively engage the campus community, through posters in buildings and on digital screens, social media, articles in Memorial publications and information sessions.

You can help prevent slips, trips and falls by paying attention to your surroundings (don’t text and walk!), slowing down, avoiding shortcuts and staying in designated walking areas, wearing proper footwear for the weather conditions, wiping off your feet when entering buildings and holding handrails while on stairs.

If you see an area that is slippery on campus, please report it to Facilities Management by calling (709) 864-7600, or emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . By reporting these conditions you could be saving someone else from injury.

If you do slip, trip or fall, please report the incident to Memorial University’s Department of Health and Safety by filling out the form located here at www.mun.ca/health_safety/accidents.
