Report of the Graduate Cost of Living Survey

While Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) has one of the lowest tuition fees in the country, the annual living expenses related to residing in a city in the midst of an economic boom appear to be a crucial factor in graduate student debt.

The Graduate Students' Union in partnership with the Teaching Assistants' Union at MUN commissioned a survey to investigate the costs of living for the graduate student body. Data was collected over a year and there was a 9.7% response rate. The sample appears representative with responses from all faculties.

We found that students spend on average $1065.22 monthly on accommodations and related household expenses, $765.57 a month on foodstuffs (equivalent to a family of four in the provincially accepted statistics for the cost of a nutritious food basket).
