Excellence in Research Award - Sylvia Reitmanova

Sylvia is a PhD Candidate at the Division of Community Health & Humanities (Faculty of Medicine) where she examines the role that policies and practices adopted by healthcare institutions, health authorities and healthcare providers play in producing and reproducing health and social inequalities of marginalized and underserved populations of diverse socio-cultural backgrounds as well as disparities in the quality of health-relevant care and services that these groups receive. Her doctoral work focuses on public health discourses surrounding the issue of immigrant tuberculosis in Canada.

In this academic year, her research excellence was recognized by four awards. She published four peer-reviewed journal publications and two book reviews in quality international and Canadian journals while four other journal publications are currently under review. Her book chapter was conditionally accepted to be published by the International Cultural Research Network. Sylvia’s work was presented at three (inter)national conferences this year. As a guest speaker, Sylvia delivered five lectures to undergraduate students in nursing, women studies and religious studies and two university seminars. In addition, she served as a reviewer for two scientific journals and one scientific conference.
