2010 Excellence in Research Winner: Zhuoyu Sun

Zhuoyu Sun is a Master student in Community Health and Humanities at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in public health at Tianjin Medical University, China in 2005. She joined Dr. Peter Wang’s group in September 2007. Zhuoyu has been working on projects related to immigrant health, and exploration of risk factors, inter-provincial differences and risk modifiers of colorectal cancer. These findings have been presented in many national/international conferences. She has produced two peer-reviewed publications as first author in the Chinese Journal of Epidemiology and Cancer Epidemiology, respectively. Another three draft version manuscripts will be submitted to worldwide journals. Meanwhile, she has co-authored a number of manuscripts led by others in this research team.

Throughout her graduate study, Zhuoyu has taken several courses and earned a grade ’A’ average. She has won several awards, such as Master’s Fellowship by the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research and Merit Scholarship by School of Graduate studies. While actively working on academic research, Zhuoyu has also participated in various volunteer activities. For example, she participated in the humanity habitat build and visited seniors in a long-term care facility. In 2008, she was one of the initiators and organizers of a fundraising event in St. John’s to help Sichuan earthquake victims.
