Well, it basically gives graduate students a chance to meet with the higher ups of the university aka 'the brass' (Dean of Graduate Studies, President of the University etc) while consuming yummy food. This year our theme is 'food from home' so there will be a variety of different dishes prepared by the GSU executive and staff of Bitters. Be prepared for some delicious stuff!

GradFest Haunted Hike

Starting: Wednesday, September 09, 2009 (9:00 pm)
Ending: Wednesday, September 09, 2009 (10:30 pm)
Cost: $3.00

Welcome traveller to St. John's, the City of Legends, and North America's oldest city. Perched on the sides of the hills surrounding St. John's harbour, and often wreathed in the misty fog that drifts in off the North Atlantic, St. John's is steeped in history... and the paranormal... Dark alleys and laneways wind through the heart of the historic downtown area, and in the shadows lurk the shades of yesteryear.

Walking through the town, one is surrounded by the memories of public hangings, duels, and horrific murders, passing over forgotten cemeteries and unmarked graves, past buildings known to be visited by those who have passed over to the other side... Vengeful lovers, murdered soldiers, and mysterious fires await those who are brave enough to explore the secrets that lie in wait in St. John's darkest corners.

For those truly brave enough, there is The St. John's Haunted Hike, a walking ghost tour of the dark back lanes of historic (and haunted) St. John's. Take part in Newfoundland's most popular paranormal event, an Ambulatory Theatrical Exploration of the Macabre, with your host, the distinguished Reverend Thomas Wyckham Jarvis, Esquire, eminent Lecturer on the Paranormal, well versed in Grimm Tales of the Vengeful Deceased, Murthers of Gruesome Dispatch, Curious Manifestations of the Holy Ghost and Historical Miscellanea.

GradFest Folk Night @ The Ship

Starting: Wednesday, September 09, 2009 (10:30 pm)
Ending: Thursday, September 10, 2009 (12:00 am)

Folk Night happens every Wednesday night at the SHIP PUB (formerly known as the SHIP INN) on Solomon's Lane (265 Duckworth).

The music goes from 9:00 pm to 12:00 am and features two sets by a solo performer or group.

During the breaks (and after each featured set) amateurs and professionals from the audience get up on stage to play tunes, sing songs, recite or contribute in their own unique way. The crowd is usually loaded (with musicians) and the entertainment is consistently good. There is also the opportunity to win several door prizes including CDs, tapes, T-shirts and books published here in Newfoundland.

GradFest Outdoor Paintball

Starting: Thursday, September 10, 2009 (11:00 am)
Ending: Thursday, September 10, 2009 (3:00 pm)
Cost: $5

The first question that comes to mind, "is paintball safe?". Well, statistically it is safer that bowling or golf. This has been proven at the Frontline Paintball facility (where we will be playing). In 16 years and many thousands of players and games they have never had an injury requiring a visit to the hospital. Compare that to other competitive sports like hockey.

You will need a good pair of boots for trekking around the field. All paintball fields are outside. The dye in the paint balls is washable if you want to wear your own equipment. Frontline Paintball rent coveralls to those who either do not have or choose not to bring their own outerwear.

GradFest Quidi Vidi Brewery Tour

Starting: Thursday, September 10, 2009 (4:00 pm)
Ending: Thursday, September 10, 2009 (8:00 pm)
Cost: $5.00

Amongst the tranquility, at the mouth of the harbor, sits Quidi Vidi Brewery Company. Formerly Cabot Seafood's fish plant, the building has undergone extensive renovations. There are a number of things that set this local brewery apart from the national breweries. The design and location of the plant are deeply connected to the local roots of its founders.

Fondly referred to as "The Gut" by locals, Quidi Vidi Village is one of Newfoundland's best kept secrets. Situated in the heart of St. John's, this rustic and historic fishing village manages to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. With its green spruce clapboard and white trim it looks comfortably at home within the rustic surroundings of the village.

The tour will take in the inside workings of the brewery and will include samples of all the Quidi Vidi Beers.

Cost - $5

It is most succinctly defined as better than watching Jeopardy at home on Thursday night, silently luxuriating in your intelligence and suffering the anxieties of procrastination in the hollows of an empty room.

The question:

What is Kat and Nate's Trivia?

Fer yeah!

That's right, people...they're back! You will never know everything but you SHOULD know what to do:

Grab some friends, take out a $20 from the cash machine for a couple of pops and get down to Bitter's Pub on Thursday Night at 9:00 to publicly declare yourself the All Knowing Commander of Information You Can't Possibly Include in Your Thesis. Share more than anxiety but a few good times with your colleagues and friends, too.
