Greetings and salutations fellow graduate student!

Welcome to Memorial University of Newfoundland.

If you’ll indulge me for a moment or two, I’d like you to have a good hard look at my photo and spend some time memorising my face. Why, you ask? Well, it’s not because I’m kissing a cod or because I’m wearing a sou’ wester backwards. It’s because my face will be a beacon of hope, a ray of sunshine, a cornucopia of happiness during the next year of your graduate studies. It’s not because I’m an Australian, or because I don’t mind making a fool of myself, but rather because I’m your Vice President Internal for the current academic year.

Whether you’re new to graduate studies at Memorial, or returning for another year you should get to know me, Emma Brand, your VP Internal. Let me elucidate. As VP Internal my role is “social planner” of the graduate student body. My purpose in life is to ensure that you have the most fun and socially rewarding graduate student experience possible.

So, you may ask, what’s the plan for the next twelve months? Well, it’s going to be a whirly gig of excitement. I’m as giddy as a school girl thinking about the events that we’re going to hold. There will of course be Gradfest and Winterfest, to kick off the fall and winter semesters.

Other perennial favourites such as Last Class Bash, the GSU Awards, and Supervisors Night will also be back. But the brain trust has been hard at work coming up with new ideas as well. I don’t want to give too much away (it’ll ruin the surprise), but the events that we’ll be holding will incorporate all members of our diverse graduate population. Almost 1/3 of our graduate population comes from outside Newfoundland. Of this third over a half are international students. I intend on tapping into this rich cultural vein to offer events that allow us all to experience a little bit of everyone’s culture.
