Greetings fellow grad students:

Welcome to Memorial University of Newfoundland.

I welcome you to the land of icebergs, whales, pubs and puffins.

Grad life is about being engaged both in your research and graduate community. After a long day of work you will need time to unwind, which is where your VP Internal is going make life good for you! Whether you are a new student or a returning student, I will do my best to offer a range of activities that will enhance your social life and provide you with an opportunity to interact with the graduate student body.

The year will kick off with GradFest to welcome new students and rejuvenate returning students. Avoid the winter blues by attending a range of exciting events and activities during WinterFest. Throughout the year GSU owned and operated Bitters pub will be THE place to be for grad students. Bitters pub offers a great food and drink selection with events being held on a regular basis. The GSU annual awards will recognise exceptional graduate students by awarding students with exceptional work in research, teaching and community services.

There is a great diversity in our graduate student’s community both in nationality and research background. A third the grad student body comes from outside Newfoundland, of which more than half are international students. Diversity is an asset to the Grad student body and we will work to facilitate a multicultural and interdisciplinary environment, introducing everyone to cultures and research from around the world.

I am sure you all will have a great year ahead, both academically and socially... That’s our aim.

Work and smiles for all graduate students!!

Feel free to contact me with any suggestions or requests.

Cheers.

Jay K. Shah
