There is no more valuable commodity at any University than the graduate student population.  University budgets are bolstered every year by external grants that depend on affordable graduate student labour.  That alone makes graduate students irreplaceable.  Add to that hours of research, teaching and mentoring and I challenge any individual or group to make the case that they provide a more integral role on a University campus.  As such, it is with great respect and humility that I take this opportunity to represent such a dynamic and fundamentally component of higher education.

There are two specific areas where I plan to focus my energy as VP Finance, communication and transparency.  In regards to communication, I will gather input directly from students, while asking department representatives to do the same, in order to work with the Finance and Health/Dental committees to identify and attack specific, student-driven initiatives.  Transparency will be evident as it has not been before.  Along with monthly written reports, I will post a monthly you-tube video summarizing the actions/decisions of the Finance committee.  No longer will you ask yourself, “What happened to that fee I gave the GSU?” 

I bring to the table extensive leadership experience with several organizations (for details see www.natewilke.ca), and will strive to make sure that experience works for us all.  I expect that there will be some changes in the GSU this year.  The transition may be tough, but improvements will follow.  I ask you for your continued support.  Thank you all for this opportunity.
