Hello fellow graduate students! Welcome to the 2010-2011 academic year at Memorial University.

As VP Academic, my role on the Graduate Students’ Union (GSU) is to: ensure adequate graduate student representation on boards, committees, and faculties of the University; be aware of the academic needs of graduate students; provide a support network for graduate students in academic disputes and appeals; represent the GSU on Senate and Academic Council; and organize workshops during GradFest and WinterFest to highlight the various academic-related services offered by the GSU and the University.

One of my primary goals during my term will be to ensure strong graduate student representation on boards, committees, and faculties of the University. Without active and diligent representation, the needs, interests, and concerns of graduate students can easily be overlooked. Along with the current GSU executive, I plan to build on the work of the previous executive in strengthening the lines of communication between the GSU and university administration. We are important stakeholders in the University, and I will work hard to make certain that graduate students are actively involved in decision-making processes at Memorial. I encourage all of you to become involved with your GSU, your academic department, and the larger campus community. There are always great opportunities to serve on committees and volunteer with events. It is your graduate degree, your GSU, and your University, and being actively involved can be valuable and rewarding experience.

As your VP Academic, I will be available to meet personally with you to discuss any academic issues and provide support by holding regular office hours. I am always accessible via email, and I can usually be found at Bitters on Friday evenings.
