Greetings Fellow Graduate Students, New and Returning:
It is with great excitement that I welcome you to the 2009/2010 academic school year. My name is Catherine Jalbert and I am the President of the Graduate Students' Union of Memorial University of Newfoundland. The graduate student population here at Memorial provides us with a rich, diverse community of individuals who I am happy to be part of and represent. For some of you, this landscape is a familiar place, one which you know quite well. To others, you're just beginning to make memories in this wonderful city and province that I hope will last a lifetime. That being said, the GSU executive members and I would like to make your transition to life in St. John's and at MUN as simple as possible.
As president of the GSU, it is my responsibility and privilege to ensure that the graduate student population has a voice on campus. Knowing your concerns, big and small, will help the GSU in promoting the changes you'd like to see and facilitating healthy relationships within your campus community between the different organizations: be it administrative or student-based. Your opinions and concerns are my main priority. I hope to build on the great things GSU has done in the past with a focus on open-communication and an aim toward strengthening the graduate community as a whole. I encourage every graduate student to get involved with your GSU and the campus at large. There are many opportunities to become a representative on a number of committees, or if you would like to get involved on another level, please come out to one of our various GSU-sponsored events.
Although your studies are important, sometimes that amount of work can be overwhelming, which is why we hope you take advantage of our GSU owned/operated Restaurant and Lounge, Bitters. Come by for a coffee or a pint and unwind - or continue studying there, as I often do, for a change of pace. It is a great place to come out and socialize with fellow grads and is just one of the many services that your GSU offers. So, please make sure to become familiar with the rest in the coming pages.
Once again, welcome to Memorial University of Newfoundland. Speaking on behalf of the executive, I know that we are all quite eager to meet and exchange ideas with all of you. Remember, never hesitate to contact myself or another member of the executive with questions, comments or ideas that you may have. Good luck and best wishes in the coming semester.
Catherine L. Jalbert
