This is a summary of the work undertaken by the VP Internal, Emma Brand from October 22, 2009 until March 9, 2010. This report is submitted to the Graduate Students’ Union at the Spring 2010 Annual General Meeting.

Costs

The events cost the GSU no money. The Bitters Halloween Bash generated the most revenue of any event at Bitters in the history of the General Manager. This really is a testament to all the hard work not only of the Bitters staff (who organized the event), but also everyone who has helped develop momentum for the GSU over the past 6 months.

Description

Welcome back to school event at Bitters and Food Bank Fundraiser.

Details

The first of a series of Food Bank Friday’s fundraisers was held. $474 was raised by selling tickets to a 50/50 draw. Tickets were one for $2 and three for $5. The winner of the 50/50 draw was ticket number 940491, with a total prize win of $237. Bitters held a drinks special of domestic bottled beer for $3.50.

GSU Matched Giving Support of the CCS Relay for Life

Description

The GSU are proud to announce their support of the 2010 Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life. For every graduate student participating in the Relay for Life the GSU will match the $10 registration fee. 25 graduate students participated, such that $250 was donated to the Relay for Life.

The Relay for Life is more than just a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to get together with family and friends and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for this terrible disease.

Relay for Life is fun, fulfilling and your participation gives strength to the Canadian Cancer Society’s mission to eradicate cancer. For more information visit www.cancer.ca.

Description

Bitters was the go-to location to watch all the Winter Olympics action for 2010. Daily updates of the events and schedule were sent out over the list-serve and for the first time ever Bitters opened to the public on a Sunday to host the gold medal match between Canada and the United States.

November 6th through 8th CFS Skills Conference

The CFS Skills Conference was an opportunity for members of CFS-member Newfoundland and Labrador post-Secondary education institutions (such as MUN, Grenfell Collage, CNA, the Marine Institute etc.) to come together in St John’s for a weekend of workshops related to lobbying, effective communication, and campaign building. It was an excellent opportunity to meet other students across the province and develop skills necessary for student leadership.

Met with Fay Murin and Noreen Golfman at Bitters for an informal lunch to help build better relationships between the GSU and the SGS.

February 9th GSU Social Events Committee Meeting via Email

I emailed the GSU Social Events committee members to update them on the current status of events and solicited some volunteers to help decorate Bitters for the Olympics.

External Meetings

February 2nd 11:00am – 11:30am Capital Campaign Meeting re: GSU Scholarships

The GSU Executive met with Tara Peirce from Capital Campaign to discuss the possibility of the GSU creating two bursaries for Graduate students.

February 6th-8th CFS Provincial AGM

The CFS Provincial AGM was held over three days in St John’s. The purpose of the meeting was to re-cap the achievements of the previous 12 months and to determine the CFS strategic focus for the next 12 months.

Committee Reports

 

Social Events Committee

The Social Events Committee met three times, on December 9, January 13 and February 9. These meetings discussed past events, current events and upcoming events. The work the Social Events Committee members undertake has been instrumental to the success of the GSU events held this year. The minutes of these meetings can be found in the monthly VP Internal reports.

GSU Awards Committee

The Awards Committee met once, on February 3. The Awards Committee is charged with announcing and awarding the GSU Awards for Teaching, Community Service and Research. The Awards Committee meets in camera so no minutes are recorded.
